Computer Shopper UK - luddites, metric martyrs or just stuck in the 20th century? (pound vs kg)

posted by hal 20021217 (archived) | permalink | path | initial version: 20021215

The December 2002 issue has "Notebooks - Your Complete Buying Guide" as the cover story. Turn to page 237 and there is a table showing the weight of all reviewed notebooks - in pounds (lbs). I've done a quick count of all the notebook adverts within the magazine. 25 of the advertisements for notebooks have information about weight. 22 of these show the weight using the metric system (kgs), 3 use the imperial system (lbs). This means that most readers looking for a laptop will be expecting a metric weight, that the suppliers prefer to use the metric system and that someone at Computer Shopper decided to sit down to make the conversion.

Some makers (like Dell page 238/239) don't even show the weight in their adverts. This is quite strange - surely it must be most of the most important issues when buying a laptop? Who cares if it is running at 1.7 or 1.8 GHz?

Wake up and smell the metric coffee Computer Shopper.
